After hiring new head coach Josh McDaniels back in mid-January and promoting Brian Xanders to general manager earlier this month, the Denver Broncos have already seen dramatic changes in their roster. The team said goodbye to three running backs (Anthony Aldridge, BJ Pope, and Alex Haynes), TE Chad Mustard, and WR Cliff Russell on offense on February 11. The defense then went through some purging just 5 days later with the release of DT Dewayne Robertson, DE John Engelberger, LB Jamie Winborn, S Marquand Manuel, and CB Dre Bly who all started a number of games last season.
Making a big impact on the free agent market, the Broncos picked up a number of big name players this past week including former Patriots WR Jabar Gaffney, former Dolphins S Renaldo Hill, and running backs Correll Buckhalter and J.J. Arrington. Not to mention, acquiring 7 time pro bowl S Brian Dawkins from the Eagles.
Many of the new additions have an opportunity to instantly become assets to the team. Dawkins will most likely get the start at the beginning of next season and Jabar Gaffney could easily become a dangerous #4 receiver in a spread offense. Arrington and Buchalter will join Torain and Hillis at the running back spot and battle for a starting position. Looking at the roster changes, it seems like the team is moving in the right direction for the upcoming season under new management, but only time will tell.
